What Exactly Is Copywriting?

If you’ve ever seen the television show Mad Men, chances are you are familiar with copy. The wildly popular show is all about the world of advertising and marketing during the 1960s. The main cast is comprised of copywriters, artists, and other branding experts.

Copywriting is writing that sells or tells others about your business, brand, product, or service. At minimum, copy is a form of communication that lets the world know that you and your brand exist.  More often, it is used to inform others of your products, goods, or services and how they can help your audience. Businesses and entrepreneurs use some form of copy every day and many may not even know it.

So, let’s break this down a little bit.

Recently, you launched a concierge laundry business. You decided to provide this service because your neighbors shared with you their sense of overwhelm. They are finding it difficult to achieve work-life balance with so many responsibilities. You happily set up your establishment with the purpose of helping to lighten their load so that they can get back to things that are important to them.  To keep your workload manageable, you only serve customers within a 5-mile radius of your home.

Now that you have a plan, you have to answer the question of how to make this all work. In short, businesses need customers and in order for customers to support your brand, they have to know you exist. So, you realize that regardless of the medium (social media, Facebook advertising, etc.) some writing is required. And, so you write. Your writing tells others about your brand and how you can help them. You offer specials and customers book you. What has just been described is a form of copywriting.

Copy is important to any and all businesses and brands regardless of the products or services offered. In order for your audience to know that you exist and have what they need, some form of copywriting is necessary.

With the historic rise of so many new companies and brands being established daily, the need for effective copy is only becoming more and more necessary. It’s easy to get lost in the shuffle without a clear, concise, effective, and consistent message. Copywriting is a must for any brand that wants to grow and keep its audience.
